Built for the HR Decisions You Have to Defend
CriticalThink HR was built for people who can learn the terms but still feel the pressure when a complaint is incomplete, a manager wants fast discipline, or policy, law, and business context are pulling in different directions. The goal is simple: make serious HR reasoning easier to practice and easier to explain.
Our Mission
Help HR professionals handle messy people situations with a repeatable process so they can understand the issue clearly, HR is not cleaning up preventable mistakes, and the company can explain later why it acted the way it did.
Why CriticalThink HR Exists
Michael saw smart candidates miss hard SHRM questions even when they knew the terminology. The problem was usually not a missing definition. It was the moment after that: sorting the issue correctly, separating facts from assumptions, checking policy and law, and choosing the next step that would still make sense later.
That is the gap CriticalThink HR was built to close. Not with more flashcards or louder branding, but with a repeatable way to work through ambiguous HR situations and explain why one answer is more defensible than another.
The product keeps the brand serious, but the work is practical: stronger fundamentals, clearer reasoning, and more reps on the kinds of complaints, discipline issues, policy questions, and business tradeoffs HR professionals actually face.
What We Are Building Toward
A serious standard for HR judgment that feels usable in the real world: clear enough for study, rigorous enough for hard workplace decisions, and grounded enough to hold up after the fact.
What Shapes the Product
These are the working principles behind the copy, question design, walkthroughs, and analytics.
Practical Realism
The product starts with situations HR professionals recognize: complaints with missing facts, inconsistent discipline, policy interpretation, and documentation that may not hold up.
Defensible Reasoning
Good answers need to hold up to policy, law, documentation, precedent, and business context. We want the reasoning to be explainable, not just impressive-sounding.
Respect for the Work
Certification prep usually happens around full-time work and real responsibilities. Features should make practice easier to keep up with, not harder to fit into life.
Current Standards
Content stays aligned to the 2026 SHRM BASK so candidates are preparing for the actual knowledge mix and decision surface the exam is built around.
Integrity
No inflated claims, no fake credential language, and no hiding behind abstract terminology when a plain-English explanation would serve the user better.
Systems Thinking
Strong HR judgment depends on how knowledge, process, precedent, and stakeholder impact work together. The product should help users see that whole picture.
Founder's Perspective

Michael D. Penn, SPHR®, SHRM-SCP®
Founder & Lead Architect, CriticalThink HR
Why do incredibly smart HR professionals still struggle on certification exams?
I came to understand that from the inside out.
Years ago, I co-founded HR Training Classes alongside an HR professional. I architected and scaled the technology infrastructure, built the operational systems and processes, and designed the participant support experience behind the business. I also worked directly with candidates through one-on-one preparation calls, which gave me a close view into where capable professionals were getting stuck: not on definitions, but on judgment.
That led me to do something most founders in this space never do. In less than two years, I went through all five major HR certifications — aPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP, SPHR, and SHRM-SCP — to understand the journey firsthand.
What I learned was clear: the hardest questions are not really testing memorization. They are testing whether you can read a messy situation, separate facts from the noise, identify what the question is really asking, and choose the best answer under pressure.
For more than 25 years, I have worked as an Enterprise & AI Solutions Architect, building systems that help leaders in HR, Finance, and Enterprise Technology navigate ambiguity and make defensible decisions in complex environments. That strategic lens became the foundation for the CriticalThink Advantage™ methodology.
I built CriticalThink HR for professionals who want more than shortcuts, keyword tricks, and memorization strategies. Through Human-AI collaborative systems, we help HR professionals strengthen executive judgment, think more clearly under pressure, and prepare for certification in a way that carries far beyond test day.
Why CriticalThink HR is Different
It is not just a larger question bank. It is built to show what broke down in the decision and what to practice next.
Built Around Real HR Patterns
The platform is shaped around employee relations, documentation, policy application, leadership judgment, and the kinds of moments candidates actually struggle to work through.
Knowledge and Judgment Together
Foundational knowledge, knowledge questions, and situational judgment live in the same system because good judgment depends on strong fundamentals.
SHRM BASK Alignment
Every scenario and question is mapped directly to the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge, so the practice mix stays aligned to current certification standards instead of drifting into generic HR trivia.
Explanations That Show the Breakdown
Walkthroughs and mentor analysis help users see whether a miss came from facts, assumptions, policy, law, or business context instead of treating every wrong answer the same way.
Analytics That Point to the Next Step
The dashboard is designed to show what needs work next, whether that means more knowledge review, more scenario reps, or more consistency under pressure.
Practice That Fits Real Schedules
The product works across desktop, tablet, and mobile so users can keep momentum when study time has to happen around the rest of life.
