What is the SHRM-SCP?

At this level, the exam is testing whether you can make strategic HR decisions that would hold up across the business.

The SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) is the premier certification for senior-level HR practitioners who develop strategies, lead HR functions, and influence organizational policies. It demonstrates mastery of strategic HR competencies and the ability to apply HR knowledge at the highest levels.

Unlike the SHRM-CP which focuses on operational HR, the SHRM-SCP is about broader decision scope. Scenarios often involve policy, enterprise risk, leadership influence, change management, and multi-stakeholder tradeoffs instead of only day-to-day execution.

It is best suited to HR directors, VPs, senior business partners, and leaders whose decisions need to work beyond one immediate team or event.

2026 Eligibility Requirements

SHRM-SCP requires strategic-level HR experience. Meet ONE of these paths:

3+ Years Strategic HR Experience

A work history of at least 3 years performing strategic-level HR/HR-related duties (minimum 1,000 hours per calendar year)

SHRM-CP Holders Transitioning

SHRM-CP certification held for at least 3 years, working in or transitioning to a strategic-level role

No Degree Required

Candidates do not need to hold an HR title and do not need a degree to apply for SHRM-SCP

Strategic HR work includes developing HR policies, overseeing integrated HR operations, directing an HR enterprise, or leading the alignment of HR strategies with organizational goals.
